Technology moves at twice the speed of light, and if you want your computer to keep up, you’ve got two options: purchase a new machine, with its own steep learning curve and an even steeper price tag, or upgrade your current device. For all the popularity of iMacs, Macbooks, smartphones and tablets, it’s unlikely that PCs will go the way of the dinosaur, so it’s good to know how to ensure your computer can remain relevant in a world of breakneck innovation. Here are five ways to upgrade your PC.

1. More RAM

The same way that human beings use their memory to perform even the most basic tasks, computers use memory – Random Access Memory, to be precise – to perform its most basic tasks: boot up the operating system, load programs, and run in a timely, efficient and reliable fashion. If your computer is slowing down, giving it a boost by adding more memory is a surefire way to upgrade it.

2. Back Up Files

Over time, your computer can get bogged down with all the data you put on it – documents, spreadsheets, presentations, pictures, songs, videos, etc. Keeping all those thousands of files on the same drive as your operating system can lead to slow performance and a heavily fragmented drive, where your computer has trouble keeping track of where all that data is. One solution to a smoother ride is to back up your data on an external drive. This also comes in handy when you want to format your drive, to give it some spring cleaning without losing any of your files.

3. Upgrade Your Monitor

Appearances can be everything – and if your monitor is starting to signs of its age, it may be exaggerating any perceived deficiencies. You could try to get a sleeker, better monitor, one that makes pictures and videos display more vividly. It could easily be the case that while your computer itself is fine, your monitor may be struggling, and a replacement might make streaming your favorite TV shows fun again.

4. Solid State Drives

External hard drives are one thing, but if you really want to go for speed and performance, then the next big thing is a solid state drive. SSDs do not have the storage capacity of hard drives, and they are currently more expensive than hard drives; but SSDs have no moving components – no spinning drives, no fans to cool the units down – so computers can read the data on the drives much faster.

5. New Video Card

Buying a new monitor to improve the visuals on your PC is great, but you won’t get very far if you don’t have a video card to handle the new system requirements. Even if you decide you don’t need a monitor, a new video card will help increase your computer’s visual performance significantly, making your pictures and videos look clearer and more colorful, and letting you run more demanding games with ease.

Upgrading your PC is something that many people dream about, but few people do. They worry it’s going to be something complicated that requires knowledge aboutmixed signal simulation or advanced coding – but it’s really simple! And something that is definitely worth the time.

CISPA is the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, the latest endeavor by lawmakers to introduce some form of regulatory control and legislation over content on the Internet. Ostensibly, CISPA calls for companies to share information with the U.S. government to help the government shore up its defenses against cyber-terrorism, but critics claim the bill does not respect privacy, confidentiality and civil liberties. Here’s a look at the people and organizations behind CISPA and its opposition.

Mike Rogers

CISPA was first introduced into the House of Representatives in November 2011 by Michael (“Mike”) Rogers, a Congressman from Michigan. He argued that the bill would not only keep the United States safe from a cyber attack, but it would also fend off economical and technological competition from countries like China and India. Rogers insists that CISPA isn’t targeting issues of intellectual property, unlike the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) that resulted in a number of significant websites temporary halting their services in protest of the Act.

Ron Paul

However, that isn’t good enough for opponents of CISPA, who have even referred to the bill as SOPA 2.0. Former Congressman Ron Paul of Texas has been very critical of the proposed legislation, claiming that passage of CISPA would bring America closer to a ‘Big Brother’ state, alluding to George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984, where a tyrannical government observes and controls every aspect of its citizens’ lives.

Dutch Ruppersberger

CISPA was co-sponsored by Dutch Ruppersberger, a Democratic Congressman from Maryland. He, along with Rogers, introduced some changes to CISPA when privacy advocates first raised concerns about the far reaches of the bill (that could even affect Accuweb Windows web hosting). These changes were not well received by critics, who argued that in its current form, CISPA’s attempts to solve the problem of cyber-terrorism is akin to hitting a flea with a baseball bat.

Mozilla

The point was summed up by Mozilla, the software community that developed the Firefox browser. In Mozilla’s view, while the goal of CISPA – protecting the infrastructure of the Internet in the United States – is worthwhile and admirable, its methods are too broad, too far reaching, and carry too great the potential of abuse by those who would wield its power.

Google

One of the loudest and heaviest voices on the Internet, Google, like Mozilla, has spoken positively on what CISPA intends to do. However, again like Mozilla, Google has questioned proposed legislation as it currently stands. While Google has not yet taken a public stance on CISPA, their blackout to protest SOPA suggests which side it might take.

When someone says that money’s no object, they have to mean it. A lot of people are on the lookout for affordable cell phones and packages that are money-saving deals. However, for the select few (ahem, Kanye), only the best will do. If a consumer is looking to spend some serious cash on a cell phone, there are a few options available. Here are the 5 best cell phones money can buy.

1. Ulysse Nardin’s The Chairman

The Chairman slides in as most expensive Android option and can cost up to nearly $50,000 depending on which bells and whistles are selected. Recognize the Nardin name? This designer usually works with luxury watches and it’s evident in the design of The Chairman. For the man–or woman–who has everything, consider this the ultimate status symbol.

2. Nokia 880 Arte

Okay, so $50,000 is pretty impressive but it’s no match for Nokia’s option. This pink-diamond encrusted beauty is probably on Paris Hilton’s must-have list and clocks in at almost $135,000. That’s right, it’s a six-figure phone that’s so fancy, art has to have that tail-end “e” included. There are 680 diamonds totaling just over 21 carats.

3. Sony Ericsson Black Diamond

If someone really wants to make a statement, only the Black Diamond will do. It retails for a neat $300,000 and–contrary to the name–it doesn’t actually have diamonds. What it does have is the seriously latest of the latest technology. It looks like something from an alien planet with a polycarbonate skin and a seemingly border-free look. It’s for when only the best will do.

4. Goldstriker iPhone 3GS Supreme

That’s right, it’s a 3G model and not 4G–and it sells for $3.2 million. An Apple product, this iPhone is made of 271 grams of solid gold, 53 one-carat diamonds and a giant 7.1 carat diamond as the “home” button. The device is carved from one slab of granite and has leather and gold linings.

5. Stuart Hughes iPhone 4 Diamond Rose Edition

The most expensive phone in existence–so far–is the Rose Edition which costs $8 million. Rose gold is obviously used here with the unique antenna band. There are 100 carats of perfect diamonds, and the Apple logo is designed with 53 additional diamonds. The home button mimics the Goldstriker, but it’s slightly larger at 7.4 carats.

Are these phones worth it? That’s up to personal opinion. However, they’re certainly worth drooling over.

Technology isn’t foolproof, and sometimes software updates just don’t work. Whether it’s an automatic update or a person has opted for an update, getting past that error message can be tricky. There are different avenues depending on the software or platform, but a few key strategies can work most of the time. Before getting stuck on the customer support line, try out these 4 steps to fix a glitch in software updates.

1. Turn Off or Reboot

Letting your PC or smartphone start over might be all it takes to re-start a software update and help it go through without a hitch. Besides helping with updates, this is something a person should be doing at least every three days anyway. It helps clear out the system, just like a solid eight hours of sleep helps humans. Try this method first to see if an easy fix is possible.

2. Manual Override

If an update is automated, sometimes all it needs is a manual override. This is especially true for Firefox updates, but it can also work with a variety of products. Accept the error message and attempt a manual update to see if that fixes the problem. This doesn’t work all of the time, but it’s certainly a better option than giving up and living with an error message.

3. Go to an Expert

Sometimes it’s best to just let the pros handle it, but there’s no reason to stay on hold forever. Depend on a reputable company like Clientfit for quick, affordable and friendly service. There are countless things that might be wrong with an update, and a quick fix isn’t always possible. Another option is going directly to the source, such as the distributor or manufacturer of the software. Oftentimes, free help is available.

4. Run as Administrator

Contrary to popular belief, no one is automatically the administrator of their personal PC. Users need to manually select this option (the process is slightly different on each platform) in order to gain more control over the issue. Close all other running programs and try a manual update as an administrator to potentially fix the issue.

When a software update fails, it’s annoying to say the least. Users deserve the latest software updates for their safety and ease of use. If an update error pops up, don’t panic. Try out these tips and there’s a good chance the update will happen shortly.

Every language is rich in its own complexities, nuances, quirks, idioms, and vocabulary so learning a new language can be a dauntingly difficult task. The most ideal way to accomplish such a task is probably through full immersion in a country that speaks the target language. However, that usually isn’t the most practical way of going about things. Luckily, one needn’t dust off old high school textbooks, traipse to the nearest classroom or drop everything and move to a foreign country. There are plenty of software programs and apps out there designed for the brave learner’s foray into the foreign language world. Below are four such applications for the budding bi – or tri or even quadri – linguist that can be used in the comfort of your own home.

Stay Engaged With Learning Activities

Games and activities that both entertain and engage a learner are highly effective forms of teaching and practice as they tend to inspire more prolonged focus and attention. An app that applies this concept to language learning is Duolingo which offers courses in the bigger Western European players – Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese. The best part of this app – it’s free!

Beware Google Translate

Google is such an integral part in the modern day search for knowledge that it has its own verb. While Google Translate is a very useful tool in terms of an instantaneous dictionary, resist the temptation to copy and paste whole sentences and passages for translation from one language to another. Translating can be a very helpful exercise in learning a new language or for getting exposure to a foreign language. However, if translation is what you seek, then it is best to invest in some sort of software or program such as those offered by Translationsoftware4U.com. When given longer passages, what the Google engine churns out is notoriously (and often hilariously) misleading.

Memorization is Key

Flashcards are an age old studying mechanism that has withstood the test of time. However, they can be tedious to make and not so environmentally friendly when faced with a whole lexicon. This makes apps such as Quizlet or Mental Case Flashcards especially nifty. With these apps, it’s possible to download pre-made sets or to craft custom decks to drill that new vocabulary into the brain.

The Rosetta Stone Giant

Rosetta Stone has been a major figure in the language learning industry since the early 90s. Their programs are based off the immersion experience and include access to live conversation with native speakers of a target language. Their application TOTALe combines this approach with an online community of fellow language learners. If you have a good chunk to invest towards an aural-based program, Rosetta Stone offers options for many languages and any level.

Learning a language can be fun, if not simple, and the selection of software, programs, and applications out there that can help students of all ages and levels is vast. It’s never too late to enrich your life with another language and with the constantly new and improving technologies, fulfilling that goal is now as simple as downloading an app.

The use of solar power energy is rapidly growing in this country and for good reason: eco friendly is business and homeowner friendly too. And, with all the different forms of alternative energy available, solar is the most efficient and effective along with wind power.

In regards to solar energy and solar panels, 2013 is already seeing some great benefits associated with this alternative energy source. Here are just a few reasons why solar panels are a win-win in 2013:

1. A Drop In Price

Since the year 2008, the costs associated with solar power energy have dropped. These drops in cost include both solar panel production and the expenses connected to solar power installation and labor.

In particular, the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) recently began a solar power campaign to ensure the end of unnecessary costs and paperwork related to the installation of solar power systems. The results of the Solar Freedom Now Campaign can already be seen with an increase in solar panel installation times due to a decrease in extraneous paperwork.

2. Incentives

New to 2013 are better government incentives in terms of solar panel usage. Not only is the government offering up to a 30% federal tax credit for homeowners and businesses that install solar panel systems, many utility companies are offering rebates to solar power users too.

These incentives are essential to the growth of solar energy as an alternative energy source. It’s important to keep in mind that rebates are aimed at US companies installing solar power systems solely based on energy usage; not all rebates reflect residential installations.

3. Beneficial Tariffs

Does an electric company paying its customers for the energy they produce seem too good to be true? Well it’s not with solar power energy. And, it’s all due to a term called “feed-in.”

Many electric companies across the country are providing feed-in tariffs to both businesses and residences that use solar power energy as an alternative energy source. A feed-in tariff is a refund provided to individuals and companies whose solar power systems are actually feeding electricity back into local power grids.

Regardless of incentives, rebates, and refunds, the heart of solar power energy is improving the health of the planet. Dependence on fossil fuels is quickly becoming a thing of the past and solar power is just one of many options in the alternative energy spectrum. So, harness the power of the sun; it’s only getting cheaper and easier to do so.

Any company, regardless of its size, has data that needs to be managed. Any given major tech company will have especially large amounts of data, which needs to be stored in a secure manner so that it can be used by its consumers and employees. Though handling all data storage in house is always an option, doing so requires specially trained personnel and equipment, which can prove to be a very costly expenditure.

Due to the cost of on-site data management, using a third party hosting service to manage company data is becoming an increasingly popular practice. Here is a brief rundown on the three most commonly used types of web hosting: VPS hosting, Managed Hosting and Self Hosting.

Managed Hosting

Just as its name implies, managed hosting is a type of hosting that is maintained and managed by a hosting provider. Client companies making use of managed hosting house servers and any other relevant hardware in their own facilities and have complete access to their servers at all times. Instead of owning equipment, client companies lease it from the hosting company. As a result of leasing the equipment, companies get all the benefits of having unlimited access to their servers on-site. However, if something goes wrong with the equipment, the host company is responsible for fixing and resolving the issue.

VPS Hosting

Virtual Private Server, or VPS hosting, is a type of hosting that allows companies purchase storage on a server that is partitioned (divided up) , so that it acts as its own individual server within a server. The VPS is housed offsite and acts in the same way an independent server would function. Though a VPS host’s server might be acting as a server for many other companies as well, each individual partition of the server does not share data or interact with other partitions. VPS hosting is great for large companies that require a lot of server space but do not want to be responsible for owning and maintaining servers in house.

Self-Hosting

Though many companies would rather not to have to manage their servers themselves and prefer having some degree of third party management involved, there are many that still prefer to host their own servers. By doing so, companies need dedicated employees to maintain and manage the servers and their own facilities to house them. However, by self-hosting companies have complete oversight over their servers and do not have to pay monthly hosting premiums to another company.

Using a computer these days is inevitable. Whether it’s a brand new iMac or a PC the size of Rhode Island, computers help us communicate, learn, relax, have fun, do our banking, conduct business, and tell us how to get to places we’ve never heard of before. The problem is that computers speak a different language, and not everyone knows how to properly tell their machine what to do, in a way the computer understands and responds to their request. Here are five computer skills everyone should have.

1. Defragging Your Drive

Defragging sounds painful and obscure, but it’s simple and does your computer a world of good. Your computer has thousands of files on it, some of which get misplaced over the course of time. Effectively, the filing system becomes fragmented. Defragging means defragmentation, telling your computer to turn its eyes inward and put the files back in their rightful places. It’s a process that can take hours, but will make your computer run smoother and more reliably.

2. Backup Your Data

Occasionally, things happen that can threaten to erase all your data – a computer virus, you hitting the wrong button, a natural disaster, etc. It’s important to know how to keep all your files and folders safe in the event of your computer biting the dust. There was a time you would have had to have hundreds of CD-ROMs on hand, but today, anything from an external hard drive to a USB drive can be used to preserve your most sensitive data in the event of a catastrophic failure. Then, when your computer is repaired (or you have a new machine), just plug the drive in, and pick up right where you left off.

3. Protect Your Computer

We’ve heard so much about the words “virus”, “Malware” and “spyware” that they’ve started to lose all meaning. The point, however, is that they’re all bad. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to protect your computer from unwanted infiltration. Your computer already comes bundle with some basic software, but there are hundreds of free, secure, reliable programs out there that will clean your computer and keep it clean. Options abound for users willing to pay to ensure 99.9% safety for their machines and their files.

4. Search for the Solution

Everybody has computer problems, even the experts. But instead of customer support putting you on hold for hours, or hounding down a relative who helped you play Solitaire once, finding out how to work around a problem is as easy as www.google.com. Boil your issue down to a few key words, use “quotation marks” to search for exact phrases, use the negative sign to exclude words you don’t want showing up in the search results, and you’ll have a list of solutions (maybe even some online IT training videos) to your problem.

5. Using Your Browser

Internet browsers have gone from simply being our starting point to connecting to the Internet, to leaving their fingerprint on our online experience. Take the time to learn how your browser – Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, even Internet Explorer – can be customized to your choices. Bookmarks, RSS feeds, tabs, private/incognito browsing, extensions, themes, and add-ons sound overwhelming, but they’re worth the time and effort to help you enjoy browsing the Internet to its fullest potential.

Augmented reality has greatly increased on the iPhone since the newer models, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s, now incorporate powerful processors and high quality cameras. Here is a look at 7 awesome augmented reality apps for the iPhone. Some offer highly convenient features that can be used in every day life. Others are just fun to play around with. No wonder augmented reality app development is so popular these days.

1. AugMeasure

Unless you are a construction worker or architect, most people don’t carry around a ruler with them at all times. This app uses augmented reality to calculate short distances for the user. Approximate distances up to 30 cm can quickly be made.

2. Pocket Universe

The recent meteor explosion in Russia may have you wondering what’s all up in the sky. This app turns the phone into a sky guide that gives information on stars, planets, comets and upcoming meteor showers. It uses the user’s location and date and time to give accurate information for the user.

3. Le Bar Guide

For users looking to find bars in an unfamiliar city, Le Bar Guide is an excellent app. The app points the way towards the nearest bars and gives information including prices, distance and address. Finding bars has never been easier.

4. Layer

For those looking to get quick information about the location they are in, Layer is really helpful. The app captures what your iPhone camera is looking at. It then processes the GPS coordinates and satellite data to then display photos and information of places that are nearby. Even if you are familiar with an area, you might still find out things you never knew.

5. SnapShop Showroom

It can be hard to visualize what a piece of furniture will look like in your house when you are out furniture shopping. This app will virtually place furniture in the room you are in using the iPhone camera. You can now tell if that particular piece of furniture clashes with the room or not. This will save many people from regretting their furniture purchases when they realize how badly a certain piece looks in their home.

6. ARBasketball

This app is a fun time waster. Users print out a marker and through using the iPhone’s camera that marker is transformed into a virtual basketball hoop. Swipe gestures are used to shoot into the virtual basketball hoop.

7. Peaks

Great for hikers or skiers, Peaks allows the user to point to any mountain and instantly get information about it. The user will get information such as how far away the mountain is from the user and what the peak’s altitude is.
