Technology moves at twice the speed of light, and if you want your computer to keep up, you’ve got two options: purchase a new machine, with its own steep learning curve and an even steeper price tag, or upgrade your current device. For all the popularity of iMacs, Macbooks, smartphones and tablets, it’s unlikely that PCs will go the way of the dinosaur, so it’s good to know how to ensure your computer can remain relevant in a world of breakneck innovation. Here are five ways to upgrade your PC.

1. More RAM

The same way that human beings use their memory to perform even the most basic tasks, computers use memory – Random Access Memory, to be precise – to perform its most basic tasks: boot up the operating system, load programs, and run in a timely, efficient and reliable fashion. If your computer is slowing down, giving it a boost by adding more memory is a surefire way to upgrade it.

2. Back Up Files

Over time, your computer can get bogged down with all the data you put on it – documents, spreadsheets, presentations, pictures, songs, videos, etc. Keeping all those thousands of files on the same drive as your operating system can lead to slow performance and a heavily fragmented drive, where your computer has trouble keeping track of where all that data is. One solution to a smoother ride is to back up your data on an external drive. This also comes in handy when you want to format your drive, to give it some spring cleaning without losing any of your files.

3. Upgrade Your Monitor

Appearances can be everything – and if your monitor is starting to signs of its age, it may be exaggerating any perceived deficiencies. You could try to get a sleeker, better monitor, one that makes pictures and videos display more vividly. It could easily be the case that while your computer itself is fine, your monitor may be struggling, and a replacement might make streaming your favorite TV shows fun again.

4. Solid State Drives

External hard drives are one thing, but if you really want to go for speed and performance, then the next big thing is a solid state drive. SSDs do not have the storage capacity of hard drives, and they are currently more expensive than hard drives; but SSDs have no moving components – no spinning drives, no fans to cool the units down – so computers can read the data on the drives much faster.

5. New Video Card

Buying a new monitor to improve the visuals on your PC is great, but you won’t get very far if you don’t have a video card to handle the new system requirements. Even if you decide you don’t need a monitor, a new video card will help increase your computer’s visual performance significantly, making your pictures and videos look clearer and more colorful, and letting you run more demanding games with ease.

Upgrading your PC is something that many people dream about, but few people do. They worry it’s going to be something complicated that requires knowledge aboutmixed signal simulation or advanced coding – but it’s really simple! And something that is definitely worth the time.

It isn’t enough to look good in that bikini or swim trunks; people need to feel good and be healthy on the inside, too. However, squeezing into that tankini can certainly provide encouragement to get on, and stay on, a health kick. Before getting that bikini wax and heading to the coast, try out these 5 tips for getting healthy and beach-body ready at the same time. Remember that when a person is healthy on the inside, it reflects on the outside.

1. Change the Diet

A diet isn’t a quick fix; it’s a way of eating for life that can constantly be changed or improved, but should be centered on health. Try controlling calories either for weight loss, gain or management, including more superfoods in the diet and ditching the bad stuff like fried foods or diet soda. When it comes to looking great, 80 percent of the battle is diet and 20 percent is exercise. Keep this in mind the next time a craving hits, and learn to swap foods such as berries for a Twinkie.

2. Commit to an Exercise Regimen

A great exercise regimen is at least 150 minutes of working out per week and includes cardio, strengthening and flexibility. Keep things mixed up to avoid getting bored and if one particular activity just doesn’t work, try something else. Exercising should be fun, so get creative and try that dance class or acro yoga. When a person likes working out, they’ll naturally do it more and that’s the secret to staying healthy.

3. Consider the Supplements

It’s nearly impossible to get all nutrients from a healthy diet alone, and many people count on supplements to make it happen. This might include a multi-vitamin, turmeric for an immunity boost, fish oil for those Omega-3s or cinnamon to help monitor blood sugar levels naturally. Work with a doctor or naturopathic expert to get tested for deficiencies and plan a supplement regimen.

4. Manage Stress

Stress can lead to physical, emotional and mental side effects, but managing it is a lot easier said than done. Consider checking in with a counselor and make some alone time every day. Simply closing the eyes, sitting in child’s pose, or listening to music for a few minutes can do wonders for stress levels. Don’t forget to also get at least eight hours of sleep, too.

5. Check In

Though something people have previously called a fad, Naturopathic services are a great way to get and stay healthy, but they only work when people use them. Seeing a naturopathic doctor in addition to a traditional doctor is a great means of getting comprehensive healthcare. See each doctor at least once a year for a physical, general check in and to make sure everything’s going smoothly.

One of the best gifts the Internet has given us is the sheer abundance of online vendors. In the dark days before online shopping, getting something you wanted involved scouring catalogues, phone calls, mailing checks, and then waiting weeks before your package arrived. Now, with literally a single click, we can place an order and count the days until our item is waiting on our doorstep. But with so many vendors offering great services, where to begin? Here’s a look at the five most popular shopping websites.

1. Amazon.com

What list about online shopping would be complete without Amazon? The Seattle, WA-based company easily owns the world of virtual purchases, offering everything from books to child car seats. It is, in fact, the world’s largest online store, and its foray into the e-book world with its Kindle e-reader and smartphone has cemented Amazon’s status as king of online shopping.

2. eBay

Whatever you want, someone out there has it, and they’re offering it to you – assuming nobody outbids you. Auctions have never been more fun or intense, thanks to eBay. Whether it’s textbooks, furniture, automobiles, celebrity memorabilia or something a little more eclectic, someone is selling it on eBay, and all you need to do is make sure the winning bid is yours.

3. Zappos

Buying books and finding deals is great, but what if you’re looking for something a little more exclusive, a little more upscale? That’s where Zappos comes in. With its selection of designer footwear, accessories and apparel, you could stack up your wardrobe with the most stylish fashion must-haves without leaving the comfort of your computer chair. Zappos also gives customers a year-long return policy, so even if you’re dissatisfied with your purchase, you have time to take care of it.

4. Craigslist

All these sites offer a lot of great stuff, but say you want to cut out the middleman and just take care of the shopping yourself. Say hello to Craigslist, where you can instantly find what people are selling in your area, narrow it down by literally hundreds of categories, and save on shipping by simply driving over and closing the transaction yourself. Unlike most other shopping sites, Craigslist also has a free section, where people just give away items they don’t want anymore. It’s not ‘shopping’, per se, but who doesn’t love free stuff?

5. REI

REI may best be known for its outdoors material and clothing, but it’s also renowned for its guarantee that online shoppers can replace any item they don’t like, at any time – REI items carry no expiration date for returns, giving customers plenty of time to try out their online shopping hauls before making a decision regarding package forwarding back to REI.

Choosing the right tunes for a wedding is either the most fun part of wedding planning–or the worst. Everyone knows the classics like “Wonderful Tonight” and “Today I Met the Boy I’m Gonna Marry,” but do they really deserve a place on the playlist? Sometimes there’s a thin line between classic and overplayed. Wedding planning can be stressful, and there’s no reason to make things worse by getting frustrated over music.

When putting together a playlist, hiring a DJ or auditioning bands, there are some key things to remember. No matter what type of style the future newlyweds have, here are the 4 most important things to consider when planning the most important day ever.

1. It Really is Forever Not only is the marriage for life, so are the videos. Does someone really want to remember their first dance to something super trendy like TI’s “Got Your Back”? Walk the line between classic wedding music and overrated, and choose something that will hopefully not be embarrassing or regretful in the golden years. This is especially important for brides and grooms who’ve invested in a great (expensive) video camera crew.

2. The Music is for Everyone

Bridezillas and meddling grooms sometimes want to use their wedding to show off their great, eclectic and indie taste in music. However, with grandma coming and a slew of elderly relatives, now isn’t the time to bust out the Violent Femmes and collection of indie rap. Instead, remember that a great party is made by happy guests. Does Uncle Ned really want to get down with Mumford and Sons?

3. Playlists are Really, Really Difficult

While it’s perfectly okay to try and put together a killer playlist for a cocktail party, it’s best to leave it to the pros for a wedding. An iPod can only do so much, and it’s impossible to seamlessly transition from song to song even if someone knows all the expert control commands. The goal is to keep people dancing, and they’ll likely leave the floor if there’s even the slightest lull between songs or a jarring transition.

4. Pick a Theme

It might sound sickly sweet, but the day is all about love, happiness and celebration. There’s no room for Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” here (at least not until everyone’s on cocktail number three). Keep the vibe in mind, but know that it can range from sultry to peppy and joyous. No matter how much a bride or groom adores a song, if it doesn’t fit in with the theme, it’s just not going to play well with others.

Most of all, have fun–it’s just music after all. Follow some simple guidelines and take some time throughout the wedding to sit back, breathe and take it all in.

Plastic surgery no longer has the stigma it used to, nor is it a taboo subject in many circles. Advances in technology and an influx of celebrities who are far too vocal about going under the knife (Heidi Montag, anyone?) have made plastic surgery more acceptable. It’s no longer a dirty secret people have to hide with sunglasses.

However, plastic surgery is a strange phenomenon that fascinates many people. That’s why shows like “Nip Tuck,” “Doctor 90210″ and “The Swan” garnered so much attention. When something is so familiar and a person can easily flip on a show about a nose job, it makes it much more feasible to the average person. Here’s a look at how plastic surgery has evolved into normalcy.

Throwback In the late 1800s and early 1900s, plastic surgery was a means of helping soldiers recover from war. It certainly wasn’t a beauty tool and wasn’t looked at as a luxury. It was, instead, a means of giving service men some semblance of the life they used to have. There are still many cosmetic surgeons who specialize in accident victim surgery.

Public Knowledge In the 1950s, plastic surgery was accepted into the general medical field because of World War II. Plastic surgeons began appearing on television and gave many people hope. It was still largely a war-driven procedure, but it became public knowledge. It’s interesting to note that TV was the main vehicle for information about plastic surgery, much like it is today.

Branching Out in the 70s By the disco era, it was clear that nearly every part of the body could benefit from cosmetic surgery. It was still very much a procedure reserved for victims, but it was gaining headway. Plastic surgeons moved to the forefront of the medical field and celebrities were starting to pay attention. The profession was on the edge of a complete makeover itself.

Kidney Transplant? Just a Better Nose, Please. Pressure was put on plastic surgeons in the 80s to operate more like a regular business than a last resort for people who had been in terrible accidents. Clearly, plastic surgery could help people look better and that’s a big selling point. Doctors began printing brochures because of the high demand and people started electing to go under the knife.

Enter the Era of Secrecy The 1990s is when plastic surgery exploded onto the market and people were opting for everything from breast implants to ear tucks. Doctors hustled to keep up, and some horror stories began to leak out. Choosing to have surgery was seen negatively, which made people hide what they did and lie vehemently to anyone who questioned their new, perfect nose. However, this secrecy also led to wrong information being passed around, and that needed to change.

On the Right Track Public perception vastly improved in the aughts and people became comfortable being open about plastic surgery. There are multiple websites gossiping about which celebs have done what, and some celebrities have opened up about it while others haven’t. Kim Kardashian is a top ranker when it comes to guessing about what she’s had done. As for her? She claims Botox is it and even had an x-ray taken of her butt on Keeping Up With the Kardashians to prove she’s implant-free.

Then there are those celebs who admit freely to getting work done, like Jane Seymour with her eye and boob job, Ashlee Simpson’s infamous nose job, and Joan Rivers and pretty much everything she could get her stretched-too-tight hands on.

Constant Advancements Just like any other medical field, there are constant advancements in the arena of plastic surgery. Gummy bear implants are all the rage since it’s a silicone implant with almost no risk of leakage. Smart Lipo melts the fat and is, thus, a much less invasive option. Dysport is giving Botox a serious run for their money since it does the same thing but costs 20 percent less.

Plastic surgery has come a long way in 100 years and it will continue to grow. Permanent solutions with decreasing risks every year? You don’t have to be a Kardashian to know that’s a tempting offer.

Dozens of San Diego area high school students have been suspended and banned from prom or commencement because of a twerking video according to one parent.

The video, created recently by students in a media class at Scripps Ranch High School, shows teenaged girls twerking while doing handstands to a YG song.

Thirty-two students danced and one student used school property to videotape the group outside class during 6th period.

Later, the student used school editing equipment to add music and post the clip to YouTube.

As a result, all 33 students were suspended as of Tuesday through the end of the week the parent told NBC 7.

The good folks at NBC took the liberty of explaining the hood’s hottest dance craze for those who aren’t hip to the game.

For those unfamiliar with the trend, twerking involves popping of the hips in a suggestive dance move. Singer Miley Cyrus recently posted a twerking video and talked about the move with Ryan Seacrest.

One Scripps Ranch HS student posted an update via Twitter, “Suspended, banned from prom, and prevented from walking at graduation all because of an awesome twerk video. I don’t understand.”

On Tuesday, another student posted on Twitter, “To show support for everybody getting suspended, we should all twerk at once at lunch #freethetwerkteam.”

Indeed, free the twerk team.

You can see the video that sparked the outrage of the school Principal below, if you’re into that kind of thing.

CISPA is the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, the latest endeavor by lawmakers to introduce some form of regulatory control and legislation over content on the Internet. Ostensibly, CISPA calls for companies to share information with the U.S. government to help the government shore up its defenses against cyber-terrorism, but critics claim the bill does not respect privacy, confidentiality and civil liberties. Here’s a look at the people and organizations behind CISPA and its opposition.

Mike Rogers

CISPA was first introduced into the House of Representatives in November 2011 by Michael (“Mike”) Rogers, a Congressman from Michigan. He argued that the bill would not only keep the United States safe from a cyber attack, but it would also fend off economical and technological competition from countries like China and India. Rogers insists that CISPA isn’t targeting issues of intellectual property, unlike the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) that resulted in a number of significant websites temporary halting their services in protest of the Act.

Ron Paul

However, that isn’t good enough for opponents of CISPA, who have even referred to the bill as SOPA 2.0. Former Congressman Ron Paul of Texas has been very critical of the proposed legislation, claiming that passage of CISPA would bring America closer to a ‘Big Brother’ state, alluding to George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984, where a tyrannical government observes and controls every aspect of its citizens’ lives.

Dutch Ruppersberger

CISPA was co-sponsored by Dutch Ruppersberger, a Democratic Congressman from Maryland. He, along with Rogers, introduced some changes to CISPA when privacy advocates first raised concerns about the far reaches of the bill (that could even affect Accuweb Windows web hosting). These changes were not well received by critics, who argued that in its current form, CISPA’s attempts to solve the problem of cyber-terrorism is akin to hitting a flea with a baseball bat.

Mozilla

The point was summed up by Mozilla, the software community that developed the Firefox browser. In Mozilla’s view, while the goal of CISPA – protecting the infrastructure of the Internet in the United States – is worthwhile and admirable, its methods are too broad, too far reaching, and carry too great the potential of abuse by those who would wield its power.

Google

One of the loudest and heaviest voices on the Internet, Google, like Mozilla, has spoken positively on what CISPA intends to do. However, again like Mozilla, Google has questioned proposed legislation as it currently stands. While Google has not yet taken a public stance on CISPA, their blackout to protest SOPA suggests which side it might take.

Recent research suggests that humans aren’t single organisms, but rather a major host of which millions of parasites help to make up. There are more than 100 trillion microbiomes in each person, mostly in the gut, and these of course consist of non-human genes. The microbiome has a big job, such as giving people 10 percent of their calories, but at what cost? Here are 5 diseases that scientists credit to microbes, proof that they’re not always the most helpful of passengers.

1. Chickenpox

Chickenpox is a virus that wiped out large amounts of people not all that long ago. It also leads to shingles as an adult, which is an incredibly painful experience. Many parents encourage their children to become exposed to chickenpox, since it’s much more manageable as a child (chickenpox can still be lethal as an adult). Just like babys with colic, chickenpox is part of growing up–but it’s thanks to microbes.

2. Pneumonia

This dangerous and painful ailment can be caused via virus, fungus or bacteria and it’s all thanks to those microbes. Without proper care, pneumonia can be life-threatening, especially in children and elders. It’s a cold gone really, really bad and the sole cause of it is humans touting around those microbes all day long. No system is perfect, and pneumonia is proof of that.

3. Athlete’s Foot

A fungus, most people know that anyone can suffer from athlete’s foot–not just athletes. Trudging around all day in sweaty shoes without proper ventilation causes a breeding ground of fungus all thanks to microbes. Athlete’s foot may not be lethal, but it’s certainly uncomfortable and embarrassing.

4. Hepatitis

There are a few different strains of hepatitis, but the viral kind is because of microbes. Hepatitis can be treated, but it can’t be cured. If it’s not caught early and properly managed, it can be lethal although that often takes years to occur. Unfortunately, most people don’t get screened for hepatitis, so it can fester long before it’s caught.

5. Urinary Tract Infection

UTIs are caused by a bacteria, and they can be very dangerous when it happens to infants. However, as an adult, they’re just excruciatingly painful. Here’s yet another example of a microbe gone bad and evidence that even the best systems (like the human one) has flaws. There are a few ways to help prevent UTIs, but for the most part it’s the luck of the draw.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of microbe-caused problems, but it’s a few of the biggies. Regular check-ups, preventative measures and a dose of luck can help people avoid them.
