Advancements In Medical Technology
We have come a long way in terms of achieving advancements in medical technology
and patient care. Depression is one of the oldest diseases that has plagued
mankind and electroshock therapy is a procedure society has turned to as a
treatment method. The ancient Romans performed this therapy by placing electric
eels on the cranium of the patient. The procedure used to be so dangerous that
the electric shock produced could fracture patients’ vertebrate. Today, on the
other hand, electroshock therapy is performed by placing electrodes on the right
side of the brain to protect the left side, which controls such important
functions as language and auditory memory.
Today, procedures involving bullet removal feature more precision-based instruments and
tools than equipment used in the past. X-ray technology is now used to locate
bullets or other foreign objects lodged in the body. In the past, before x-ray
technology, patients faced a 71 percent chance of death when shot in an
extremity. Individuals dealing with the common cold should also be happy to know
that while there is still not a cure for the condition, there is temporary
relief available from symptoms, which was not the case in the past. This
infographic highlights various advancements that have been made in specific
medical procedures. The fact that anesthesia and pain relievers have replaced
alcohol and opiates as the primary sources of pain relief today should tell you
just how far we’ve come.
